We may soon be sharing our roads with cars that don’t have anyone behind the steering wheel.
According to the European Parliament, driverless vehicles will be on the EU market from twenty twenty (2020).
Those in favour of self-driving cars and trucks say they’ll help to drastically reduce road traffic accidents which are largely the result of human error.
However, there are few rules controlling the way autonomous vehicles can operate in the EU. And today MEPs in Strasbourg voted for a range of proposals aimed at governing their use in Europe.
The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune who is on the European Parliament’s Transport Committee explains.

Today’s vote on Theresa May’s Brexit deal in the House of Commons is creating real concern in EU circles.
So says the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly who was speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The Ireland South MEP this morning met the EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier. Sean Kelly says he believes there’s very little capacity to change the Brexit agreement that the EU recently struck with Mrs May.
And he says today’s vote could create even more uncertainty.
