The six month UK-Brexit extension that was agreed by the European Council last week runs the risk of poisoning the European elections and putting EU unity at risk.
That’s the verdict of the European Parliament’s chief Brexit co.ordinator – Guy Verhofstadt.
He was speaking during a debate in the Parliament this morning on the outcome of last week’s summit which saw the EU agree to give the UK a six month extension of Article 50.

Guy Verhofstadt was speaking in the European Parliament this morning.
He told MEPs he fears the extension will import what he called the “Brexit mess” into the EU and that it will poison the upcoming European elections.

Northern Ireland could end up being on a different time-zone to the Republic under new rules on daylight saving.
So says the Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy who was referring to last week’s vote in the European Parliament to end the switch between summer and winter time in 2021.
Under the new proposal, EU countries can either keep their summer time and adjust clocks for the last time in March 2021.
Or they can stick to standard winter time and change their clocks for the last time in October 2021.
Matt Carthy says we could end up with a situation where we have two different time-zones on the island of Ireland.

Manufacturers of fishing nets and marine gear that get lost at sea will be responsible for their management in the future.
A new law approved this week (Wednesday 27 march) by the European Parliament, applies the polluter pays principle. This new regime will apply to fishing gear, to ensure that manufacturers, and not fishermen, bear the costs of nets lost at sea.
In the future, producers of marine litter such as fishing nets will have to cover the cost of their waste management once they’re delivered to port reception facilities.
The new laws are all part of European moves to reduce marine litter. The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says it’s a positive move.

Journalist Karen Coleman talks to the Sinn Fein MEP Lynn Boylan about the vote in the European Parliament this week on a new law banning single-use plastic items such as plates, cutlery, straws, plastics balloon sticks and cotton buds sticks made of plastic.
They are to be banned in the EU by 2021.
The new law also sets a 90% (ninety percent) collection target for plastic bottles by 2029. And it states that recycled materials should make up twenty five percent (25%) of each plastic bottle by 2025. That’s to increase to thirty percent 30% by 2030.
The agreement also strengthens the application of the polluter pays principle.

The European Parliament this week approved a new law banning single-use plastic items such as plates, cutlery, straws, plastics balloon sticks and cotton buds sticks made of plastic.
They are to be banned in the EU by 2021.
The agreement also strengthens the application of the polluter pays principle.
Lynn Boylan says producers of plastic products and packaging have to be made more accountable and take more responsibility for collecting their plastic waste products.
