MEPs in the European Parliament have been reacting to moves by the British Prime Minister to make it illegal for the UK to extend the Brexit transition period beyond the end of 2020.
It’s reported that Boris Johnson wants to amend the Brexit Withdrawal bill to ensure the UK must leave the EU at the end of next year and that it cannot ask for an extension.
The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly says it’s a reckless move and that it could jeopardise the chances of forging a decent trade deal between the EU and the UK.

Irish woman Emily O’Reilly will face another round of votes tomorrow in the European Parliament when MEPs take part in a second ballot for the election of the EU Ombudsman.
Ms O’Reilly was first elected to the post in 2013. And she’s been the EU Ombudsman since then. But the post is up for grabs now that the Parliament has started its new mandate.
The first ballot was held today but none of the five contesting candidates won the required majority of votes.
However O’Reilly secured the biggest backing with (240) two hundred and forty votes. The runner up got (162) one hundred and sixty two.
The Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh says she and her fellow Fine Gael MEPs are all supporting the Irish woman.

The departure of British MEPs from the European Parliament will be a big loss to Ireland when they leave in January.
That’s according to the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly who was speaking in Strasbourg where the Parliament is holding its monthly plenary session.
There are currently seventy two MEPs from the UK. But they will all have to go when as anticipated, Britain leaves the EU at the end of January.

O’Reilly wins most votes in 1st ballot for EU Ombudsman – O’Sullivan

Irish woman Emily O’Reilly has won a significant number of MEP votes in the first round of secret ballots for the next EU Ombudsman.
Ms O’Reilly has held the position since 2013. Four other candidates are also running for the job. But she won two hundred and forty votes today while the runner up got one hundred and sixty two.
MEPs will hold a second round of voting tomorrow. The Green Party MEP Grace O’Sullivan says Emily O’Reilly is the best candidate for the job.

429 MEPs backed the resolution in Strasbourg this morning while 225 voted against.
It makes Europe the first continent to declare a climate emergency.
