EU has “huge problem with disconnection” - Walsh

The citizens of Europe must be centrally involved in shaping the reform of the European Union.

So says the European Parliament which this week voted for a resolution on the upcoming Conference on the Future of Europe which is to start in May.

MEPs want to see the establishment of several citizens’ assemblies involving people of all ages and backgrounds across the Bloc.

The Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh says the EU has to do more to  connect with the citizens of Europe.

The Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher says he wants to vote for the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement but that he needs clarity around certain issues.

Mr Kelleher says people across the EU have “grave concerns” that EU citizens living in a post-Brexit UK will have to apply for a settlement status. He’s warning it’s “very questionable” whether they will get that status automatically.

The aim of this new EU initiative is to engage people from across the EU in discussions that will help set the EU’s priorities and shape its future.

MEP hopes von der Leyen will “listen” during Irish visit – Sullivan

The Taoiseach will host a dinner for the President of the European Commission in Dublin this evening. 

Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to Ireland today comes as the UK gets set to leave the EU and difficult trade talks between the EU bloc and the UK begin.

The Green Party MEP Grace O’Sullivan says she’s hoping the EU chief will listen to people during her trip to Dublin.

Clarity needed on future citizens’ rights post Brexit – Kelleher

The Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher is calling for more clarity in the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement on the future status of EU citizens living in the UK including Northern Ireland. 

The Ireland South MEP says a range of issues need to be clarified including what rights and entitlements EU citizens will have if they end up living in the UK post Brexit.

Frans Timmermans on EU Just Transition Mechanism and Fund

The EU Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans today outlined details of the EU’s €100bn Just Transition Mechanism and Fund.

Timmermans promises help for “peat harvesters” in Midlands

Tech giants must produce common mobile chargers

Tech giants like Apple should produce common mobile chargers that would fit multiple devices across the EU.

So say MEPs in the European Parliament who’re calling on the European Commission to introduce measures that would force the mobile device industries to manufacture a common charger for mobile phones and other portable devices such as tablets and e-book readers. They say such binding measures would reduce electronic waste and make consumers’ lives easier.

The Green Party MEP Ciarán Cuffe says it should be possible to get the likes of Apple to produce a common charger.
