The European Parliament held a special session last Thursday and Friday (16th/17th April) to debate and vote on the EU’s response to the COVID-19 crisis. On Friday they endorsed a range of measures to help deal with the fallout of the pandemic.

The European Parliament has approved three billion euro (€3bn) in EU aid to support the EU healthcare sector.
The funds should enable the EU to buy urgent medical supplies, such as masks and breathing equipment as well as transporting medical kit and patients in cross-border regions.
The monies should go towards financing the recruitment of additional healthcare professionals to be deployed to hotspots across the European Union and to construct mobile field hospitals.
Today’s vote was part of a range of Covid-19 measures approved by MEPs in the European Parliament today.

The European Parliament has approved a range of measures to help those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. MEPs today endorsed the European Commission’s “Corona Response Investment Initiative Plus” package.
The measures include maximum flexibility in channelling EU structural funds to fight the impact of the virus on citizens.
Enhanced support to EU fishers and aquaculture farmers and agri-food producers were also endorsed as well as a fund for European Aid to the most deprived.
The Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly explains how Ireland might benefit from the measures.

The European Parliament has been voting on what are being called “exceptional measures” to allow more flexibility to use EU cohesion and structural funding to alleviate the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.
There’re also measures to provide financial assistance to protect hard-hit fishing communities and aquaculture farmers.
