“Tough Threshold” to get 2/3rds Green approval for Gov programme – Cuffe

The Green Party MEP Ciarán Cuffe says it will be tough to secure the required two thirds approval from Green Party members for the proposed programme for government.

Members of the party from both Northern Ireland and the Republic will get to vote on the draft programme. But a two thirds majority will be required to get it over the line.

MEP urges Irish to spend on home-grown tourism this year – Walsh

The Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh is urging people in Ireland to spend their money on home-grown tourism destinations to help businesses badly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Midlands North-West MEP says she’s hearing on a daily basis about local businesses that are struggling because of the Covid crisis.

EU Covid rescue funds need to go to local businesses asap – Walsh

Desperately needed monies from the proposed EU Recovery Plan need to get to recipients as soon as possible.

That’s the verdict of the Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh.

Last week the European Commission proposed a massive seven hundred and fifty billion euro Covid recovery fund to help EU countries, regions and sectors deal with the economic fallout of the pandemic.

The Midlands North-West MEP says there are plenty of businesses in her constituency that could do with EU help especially those that rely heavily on tourism.

The EU’s long-term budget under the spotlight

EU leaders and the European Parliament will have to sign off on the EU’s long-term budget before it can come into action.    

Last week the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled details of the revamped budget that will run from 2021 to 2027. She told the European Parliament the European Commission was proposing a budget of one point one trillion euro (€1.1 trillion).

That would be complemented by an additional €750billion Covid recovery fund along with three safety nets already agreed of up to €540bn to support citizens, businesses and countries hit by the Covid pandemic.  

So what can we expect from the EU’s long-term budget proposals?

EU proposals for development of digital technologies welcome - O’Sullivan

European Commission proposals to significantly increase the development of digital technologies is a significant move in the right direction. So says the Green Party MEP Grace O’Sullivan.

She was commenting on recent announcements by the European Commission to ensure the next multi-annual EU budget facilitates what it’s calling “a fair and inclusive transition to a green and digital future”. 

The Commission is proposing a raft of measures to help EU Countries develop digital technologies so that all 27 member states can engage in a deeper and single digital market.

Grace O’Sullivan says the Covid pandemic has shown how digital facilities have helped people to work remotely during the crisis.

Ireland will “robustly” defend EU push to raise corporate taxes – Kelleher

Ireland will “robustly” defend any EU pressure to increase its low corporate tax rates.  That’s the warning from the Fianna Fail MEP Billy Kelleher.

He was responding to last week’s announcement by the European Commission of a seven hundred and fifty billion euro (€750bn) recovery plan. The proposed funds will go towards helping countries, regions and sectors recover from the financial impact of the Covid pandemic.

The Commission is proposing a range of options to get its own sources of revenue to repay the massive loans that will be required to fund the recovery plan.

They include imposing annual levies on large multi-national companies to access the EU’s single market.

Future CAP budget could see overall “cut” of €20 billion - Kelleher

The Common Agricultural Policy budget could see a cut of twenty billion euro if European Commission budget proposals are accepted.  That’s according to the Fianna Fail MEP Billy Kelleher.

Last week the European Commission outlined its revised proposals for the EU’s next 7-year budget known as the multi-annual financial framework or MFF. It will run from 2021 to 2027. The Commission also announced proposals for a seven hundred and fifty billion euro (750bn) Covid recovery plan.

Billy Kelleher says the Commission’s proposals would lead to a significant cut to the overall CAP budget.

EU’s ability to raise own resources “makes sense” – Kelly

The European Commission’s pitch to be able to raise its own resources to help finance the repayment of monies raised for the EU’s proposed seven hundred and fifty billion euro (€750bn) recovery fund, makes sense.

So says the Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly.  

The Commission is proposing a range of options to get its own sources of revenue. They include imposing annual levies on large multi-national companies to access the EU’s single market. Other proposals include carbon border levies and taxes on digital companies.  

Sean Kelly says enabling the EU to raise its own resources, on top of the annual contributions made by member states to the overall multi-annual EU budget, is a good idea.

Ireland could experience a “renovation wave” if the European Commission’s €750 billion recovery plan is approved by EU member states.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen unveiled details of the ambitious plan that’s designed to help EU countries deal with the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

The mix of grants and loans will be channelled through programmes in the EU’s long-term budget that will run from 2021 to 2027. They include the European Green Deal which calls for a massive renovation wave of buildings and infrastructure that will bring jobs to the construction sector.

The European Commission’s seven hundred and fifty billion euro (€750bn) Covid recovery proposals are likely to lead to a “renovation wave” within the construction sector.

That’s according to the Green Party MEP Grace O’Sullivan.

The Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this week unveiled a raft of proposals for its recovery plan called Next Generation EU.

The European Green Deal remains a central component of the recovery plan. Part of that Green strategy includes a massive renovation of buildings and infrastructure to make them more climate neutral.
