UK participation in EU elections poses “difficult” situation for Ireland – McGuinness

March 27, 2019

The prospect of the UK participating in EU elections will raise challenging issues for Ireland which is set to gain two MEP seats once Britain leaves the EU.

However, if the UK seeks a long extension to Article 50, then it will have to contest the European Parliament elections which take place between the 23rd and 26th of May.

If that’s the case, it’s unclear what will happen to Ireland’s two extra MEP seats.

The Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness says such a scenario poses a number of questions.
