“Real risk” EU law jeopardising medical devices

Lifesaving medical devices will no longer be available if the EU sticks to the letter of the law, Deirdre Clune has warned. An estimated 15,000 medical devices such as heart valves, breast implants and catheters need to be recertified to conform to an updated EU law. But with the deadline approaching, only around 15 per cent have so far been registered. The rigorous certification process is a legal requirement designed to keep patients safe. Without certification, doctors cannot use them. Fine Gael MEP, Deirdre Clune, says the EU must come up with a solution to ensure devices continue to be available whilst not undermining patient safety.
