The European Parliament today called for more investment for carers throughout the EU. MEPs also want EU countries to recognise the right to care and they say legislative measures are needed for decent working conditions for carers.
Between forty to fifty (40m to 50m) million people provide informal care on a regular basis in the EU and the majority of carers are women. According to the European Parliament ,eighty percent (80%) of all long-term care in Europe is provided by informal carers. MEPs are calling for European structural and investment funds to be used to invest in childcare, care for older people and others in need of care.
Dublin MEP Frances Fitzgerald says the EU needs to play a bigger role in the whole area of care.
