MEPs will vote on a range of proposals to give consumers incentives to get goods repaired rather than replaced. They want rules to ensure products like computers, washing machines and mobile phones last longer and that consumers have access to cheap spare parts and software updates.
Tomorrow’s vote (Thursday) comes ahead of European Commission proposals on right to repair rules expected later this year.
According to a Eurobarometer survey, 77% of EU consumers would rather repair their goods than buy new ones. But they have to replace or discard them because of the cost of repairs and lack of service provided.
In the following interview, Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune talks to Karen Coleman (in the European Parliament in Strasbourg) about the need to replace our “throwaway culture” with the right to repair.
