The EU’s new Common Agricultural Policy has finally been approved after years of tough negotiations. The European Parliament voted in favour of the policy today which will now come into force in 2023.
Under the reformed CAP, farmers will have to comply with climate and environmentally-friendly practices. Member states will be obliged to ensure that at least 35% of the rural development budget and at least 25% of direct payments will be dedicated to environmental and climate measures.
Each EU country will need to prepare a strategic plan to implement the policy over the next five years. This will allow them to take local conditions into account and to focus on performance.
Ireland South MEP Billy Kelleher explains how the CAP will impact farmers in Ireland.
