The European Commission’s proposal to update the Industrial Emissions Directive is a bureaucratic nightmare for Irish farmers and will do little to address environmental challenges.
So says Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey. The Commission proposals extend the scope of the directive to gradually cover Europe’s largest cattle, pig and poultry farms. According to the Midlands North-West MEP, that would see thousands of farmers having to apply to the Environmental Protection Agency for an industrial emissions license under strict conditions.
He says the thresholds are far too low and the timing is all wrong. (The Industrial Emissions Directive is one of the EU’s key pieces of legislation to help prevent and control pollution.)
