Interview Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes on “Accidental Americans”

July 8, 2018

Karen Coleman talks to the Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes about the “Accidental Americans” and how people who were accidentally born in the US may be liable for tax even if they’ve never lived or worked there.

The plight of the so-called ‘Accidental Americans” was voted on this week in the European Parliament.

MEPs in Strasbourg voted for a resolution calling on the European Commission and EU countries to come to an arrangement with the US to ensure people aren’t unfairly landed with a tax bill from the US tax authorities - the IRS.

In the interview Brian Hayes explains what being an accidental American means when it comes to US tax liabilities.
