The European Parliament today gave the green light for the EU 27 heads of state to move to phase two of the Brexit negotiations with the UK. An overwhelming majority of MEPs approved the Joint EU-UK progress report agreed last week. However, MEPs are insisting that the negotiations can only progress if the UK government fully respects the commitments it gave in the Joint Report and fully translates them into the draft Withdrawal Agreement. The Parliament has also warned that the UK’s commitments on Northern Ireland must be implemented. The Fine Gael MEP Deirdre Clune says the Irish situation “will have to be protected” in the next round of Brexit talks.
